INTERNATIONAL (BALTIC) ACO-COURSE

About the course:

General

The Finnish Border and Coast Guard Academy is arranging an international ACO (Aircraft Co-Ordinator) COURSE.

The duration of the course is five (5) days.

The ACO course aims to provide knowledge to those who may be designated to perform the duties and responsibilities of the Air Traffic coordinator for a search and rescue incident, mostly defined in the International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue Manual (IAMSAR).

The focus of the course is related to maritime rescue helicopter and fixed wing pilots involved in maritime rescue organization to save human lives in a maritime SAR operation.

Basic purpose of this course is to assist States in meeting their own SAR needs, and the obligations they accepted under the International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue, 1979 and its amendments together with the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), 1974, and its amendments, remembering that this ACO method is a part of IAMSAR Manual.

The course is intended to provide an introduction to the organization of a maritime search and rescue (SAR) service in general and train the functions and tasks of the Air Coordinator in specific.

The course covers the co-ordination of SAR operations, initial action by assisting craft, search and rescue functions, specific radio communications, on-scene air co-ordination, and on-board emergencies in all simulated weather conditions.

Trainees completing of this course will have a closer overview over all relevant functions within a SAR Air coordinator mission.

Recommended Entry Standards

This course is generally intended for experienced helicopter and fixed wing pilots or other crew having a good knowledge within Maritime SAR. Also personnel from e.g. JRCC`s taking part in the ACO-function are welcome to participate in the course.
